Bass Harbor Head Light [Canon 5D]

This is a blend of two horizontal exposures to expand the number of pixels used to capture the scene. The Photomerge feature in Photoshop CS3 was used to stitch the two shots together. I wanted to go for a real long exposure for this to cause the ocean to be a silky smooth blur so I used a 5-stop solid Neutral Density filter and an aperture of f/20 to come up with a 30-second exposure time.
This was taken shortly after the creeping tendrils of evening fog had reached my location. I also have some sunset shots of this lighthouse and while they came out great and it looks lovely, I feel that the shots in the thick fog have much more atmosphere and interest.

I really like this one...the "Duggan Toning" as I've come to think of it, really works here. Plus, I'm a big fan of fog and we are into an early fog season this year here in Sarajevo. With two horizontal exposures, the top being much brighter than the bottom, did you use manual and keep a constant shutter speed and aperture? or did you adapt your exposure to the brighter top half and deal with the blending in processing? and wow, that could print BIG :) Jeff L.

Hi Jeff...good to hear from you; thanks for stopping by. The exposure was the same for both shots...30 seconds at f/20. I let Photomerge handle the basic stitching directly from the raw files and then used a little bit of a Shadow/Highlight adjustment to open up some of the darker details in the lower part of the image. Fog in Sarajevo...Mmmmm, that sound mighty tasty to me (in a photographic sense).
