I'm back from my 9 days in New Mexico. I had a very good week teaching my Creative Digital Darkroom class at the Santa Fe Photographic Workshops. The main reason the week had such a good vibe is due to the wonderful group of people who traveled from afar to take the workshop. They all worked hard, learned alot and produced some incredible images throughout the week. So, thanks to Kelly, Randall, Melody, Bryan, Syd, Penny, Judy, and Neal (back for the 2nd summer in a row!) for being such engaging and enthusiastic students. Many thanks also to Dottie and Susan who set a high standard for excellence in course assistants. And, of course, thanks to Reid Callanan, Renie Haiduk, Jerry Courvoisier and all of the great people at the Santa Fe Workshops for having me back for the 3rd year in a row and for running such a smooth, first rate operation. I look forward to coming back in the summer of 2008.
The image above is the class photo we took during our second location shoot of the week at the old New Mexico State Penitentiary just outside Santa Fe. This part of one of the old cell blocks that was burned in the riot of 1980 was modified on the exterior to serve as a set for the Adam Sandler remake of The Longest Yard in 2005 (you can see parts of the stucco have come off, revealing the plywood underneath). The old prison has also served as a location or production staging area for many films and television productions. It also serves as a great location for photography and this is the second year that I have taken my class there. One of the techniques we covered during the week was distressing images and adding textures. The beat-up, grunge effect created by this texture seemed a good fit for the old prison location.
Below is an image taken in the digital lab of our "Wall of Prints" on Friday afternoon (as always, click in the image to see it larger).
