This is one of the more bizarre examples of public airport art that I have seen. It's on the ceiling in the Delta baggage claim area at the Atlanta Airport. Now, I don't have a problem with big metal bugs, and I think this is actually pretty cool, but I can imagine that some people who have issues with ants, or bugs in general could get seriously freaked out by a sculpture of giant 3-foot long ants crawling overhead! Especially if you're fatigued and loopy with jet lag...(and this is only a few of them; there's a whole platoon marhcing across the entire width of one support beam in the baggage claim hall).

Maybe they should rename this the William Burroughs Memorial Baggage Claim area.

But, I digress...

I am stuck here in Atlanta since my flight to Portland, Maine was cancelled due to thunderstorms (I started the day in California and it has been a very long day). Now it's 2AM Atlanta time and I am in an airport hotel and the earliest I can get a flight to Portland is 6:30PM tomorrow evening....

Sigh....

I'll be teaching a weeklong workshop the first week of August in Santa Fe at the Santa Fe Workshops. The class is Real World Digital Photography and as of this week there are only 4 spaces left. This workshop, which I taught in Santa Fe last summer, is a hybrid between a digital photography class with an emphasis on digital SLRs and shooting RAW, and a Photoshop class in their excellent digital lab facilities. The breakdown is approximately 35–40% photography in the field and 60–65% Photoshop technique for getting the most out of your digital images. This is not really a cockpit, but it does have a vague resemblance to the cockpit of some retro vehicle, hence the title. It is actualy the top observation window of an old rail car in Santa Fe.

Bookstore Reverie

This was taken last October when I was teaching at the Maine Photographic Workshops. It was the last night and I was heading out for a late dinner with a group of students from the class. I passed by this bookstore in Camden and really wanted to go in and browse but they had just closed. Since I couldn't lose myself in the books, I took a photo of the display window instead. This is a slow exposure (0.3 seconds) and the lens was zoomed while the shutter was open. You can see another image that was made with this same zooming effect here.
